HELPS Program
Self-Regulation – Identified by neuroscientists as the most important predictor of academic success in children and in relationships, self-regulation must be nurtured and taught to young children.  This section will highlight its meaning and offer suggestions for teaching it to children.Self-Regulation and Brain Development[4:41] defines self-regulation and its development by Dr. Regalena Melrose, licensed clinical psychologist and author of books for parents and educators
Scaffolding Self-Regulated Learning[4:01] Building on the ideas of Lev Vygotsky and Jerome Bruner, the consultants for this film worked with teachers in urban schools to foster self-regulated learning. This production presents both the theoretical underpinnings of their work and its results. Viewers visit busy classrooms where students are being helped to take responsibility for their education. The film offers useful viewpoints on constructivistic practice in elementary education.
Vygotsky’s Developmental Theory: A Introduction[4:02] The work of Lev Vygotsky is increasingly cited as we reconsider the theory and practice of constructivist education. This program introduces the life, vocabulary and concepts of Lev Vygotsky. The video illustrates four basic concepts integral to his work: Children construct knowledge, learning can lead development, development cannot be separated from its social context, and language plays a central role in cognitive development. Elena Bodrova brings an easy familiarity to these concepts. Play: A Vygotskian Approach[3:51] This film offers both theoretical and practical perspectives on dramatic play. Using enchanting sequences of young children playing house, doctors office, rescue squadron, and trick or treating, the theoretical positions of Lev Vygotsky and other prominent theorists have taken in systematically studying play are illustrated. This film carefully reviews the traditional ways of studying play: the Freudian-Eriksonian emphasis on its emotional content, the Piagetian view of its importance in symbolic representation and the social psychological approach of looking at how play contributes to socialization. Lev Vygotskys unique contribution of seeing play as an arena in which a child can begin to master her own behavior is carefully detailed.
